How Does Invisalign Treatment Work?

Invisalign consists of clear aligners that are customized for each patient. These aligners are worn for approximately 20 hours every day, and over time, the teeth align with them.

The Invisalign Process

There are a few steps to implementing Invisalign braces, though the process is still quicker than that of traditional braces.

  1. Consultation: A dentist will meet with the patient to determine if they are a potential candidate for Invisalign. They will discuss the patient’s goals, and determine if Invisalign matches up with those goals.
  2. Treatment Plan: Once the dentist has determined that the patient is a viable candidate for Invisalign, a treatment plan will be established.
  3. Preparation for Invisalign: The patient’s case must be submitted to the Invisalign company. The dentist will take impressions of upper and lower jaws and teeth. They will also take photos of the inside and outside of the mouth.
  4. Final Treatment Plan: A full treatment plan will be established and approved, including a timeline of treatment.
  5. Manufacture of Aligners: Invisalign aligners typically take two to three weeks to create, since they are custom-made.
  6. Appointment to Receive Aligners: Once the aligners are completed and received, an appointment is made to place resin attachments onto certain teeth, which the aligners will snap onto.

Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

Invisalign braces are very different from traditional metal braces. Traditional braces consist of wires, brackets, and spacers. Invisalign is simply a clear tray that snaps onto attachments. Traditional braces also require special care, since they cannot be easily removed and food can get stuck in them. Invisalign aligners can be removed by the patient for eating, brushing, or flossing. Invisalign is also safer since there is no metal that could possibly cut into cheeks and gums.
